Total Solar Reflectance (TSR): The Science Behind the Performance
One of the most reliable ways to measure how effective a roof coating is at repelling heat is through its Total Solar Reflectance (TSR). Expressed as a percentage, TSR tells you how much of the sun’s total energy, including visible, ultraviolet, and especially infrared radiation is reflected away from the surface.
The higher the TSR, the cooler your roof stays and the less heat enters your building.
While weather conditions like cloud cover and wind can affect surface temperatures, coatings with high TSR values consistently outperform conventional paints in thermal protection.
Liquid Rubber DIY Thermal Coating Membrane uses advanced nanotechnology to enhance this reflectivity even further. Its film surface is engineered with nano-scale particles that cross-link tightly, boosting both heat-reflective power and self-cleaning properties so dirt, dust, and pollutants don’t stick, maintaining peak performance over time.
- Lowers roof temperatures
- Reflects up to 90% of infrared heat
- Reduces energy costs and HVAC strain
- UV protection to extend roof lifespan
- Easy to apply. Just roll or brush on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply the Thermal Coating over existing coatings or sealants?
Yes, the Thermal Coating can be applied over most existing coatings, but the surface must be clean, dry, and in good condition and it is very important to apply the Sealer/Primer or the Etch Primer (for raw metal surfaces) before applying the Thermal Coating.
What tools and equipment do I need to apply the Thermal Coating?
Application is simple. Use a paintbrush, roller, or a spray machine for larger areas Basic safety gear such as gloves is recommended, and keep a suitable cleaner handy for spills and tool cleanup.
How do I apply the Thermal Coating?
- Ensure the base surface (Waterproof Sealant or primed metal) is fully cured
- Apply 2-3 coats of Thermal Coating with brush, roller, or spray machine
- Allow 24 hours between coats
- Apply 3 coats over Waterproof Sealant or 2 coats minimum over primed metal
What is the best way to prepare the surface for application?
Use a power washer to clean the surface. The surface must be clean, dry, and free of loose paint, rust, and other contaminants.
What are the benefits of Thermal Coating?
- Reflects heat and UV radiation
- Reduces surface temperature
- Protects underlying waterproofing
- Extends the life of the waterproofing system
How many coats of Thermal Coating should I apply?
Apply 3 coats over Waterproof Sealant or 2 coats minimum over primed metal. The amount in the Kit Builder is enough for up to 3 coats.
When is the best time to apply?
Apply in dry, mild weather. Avoid application if rain, dew, or strong winds are expected within 24 hours. This helps the coating cure properly and prevents moisture from affecting adhesion.
Is it safe for drinking water collection?
Yes. If you're collecting rainwater for drinking purposes, disconnect the downpipes for the first downpour to allow the system to wash thoroughly before reconnecting. Alternatively, once the thermal coating has fully cured, you can power wash the surface and then reconnect the downpipes. Liquid Rubber DIY products are safe for rainwater collection and will not compromise water quality after the recommended washing process is complete.
What spray machines are you using?
We spray Liquid Rubber DIY waterproof sealant with a Graco Mark V airless spray machine. For the thermal coating we use a VEVOR airless spray machine.
How long does shipping take in Australia?
We ship Australia wide. Orders typically arrive within 3 to 8 business days. Local pickup is also available at 1 Conway Court, Nerang, Gold Coast, QLD 4211.
