How to Apply Rust Fix
Straightforward enough for a DIYer.
Solid enough for a trade finish.
Pressure Wash the Roof
Remove all loose, flaking rust and debris. A clean surface is the foundation — anything unbonded to the metal will cause the membrane to fail over it. Let it dry.
Rust Convert (Recommended)
Apply a phosphoric acid rust converter to active rust areas. Converts red rust into a stable surface the membrane bonds to. Available at Bunnings. Follow product directions, rinse with clean water, and allow to dry.
Apply Rust Fix
Roll or brush Rust Fix across the surface in even coats. The battleship grey colour makes it easy to spot missed areas. Apply additional coats as required for your coverage rate.
Seal Holes with Geo-Textile
For holes or splits, embed a strip of geo-textile into a wet coat of Rust Fix directly over the hole. Apply another coat over the top to fully encapsulate it.
How It Stops Rust — For Good
Most paints and coatings allow trace amounts of oxygen to reach the metal underneath.
That's why rust keeps coming back. It's still breathing under the coat. Rust Fix works differently.
It forms a continuous, airtight rubberised membrane that bonds directly to the surface. No oxygen gets through.
No oxygen means no rust growth. The rust is buried in place — sealed off permanently.
Rust Fix doesn't remove rust.
It buries it and stops it breathing.
-
Rubberised membrane — not a paint.
Forms a continuous sealed surface, not a film coating. -
Cuts off oxygen supply.
No oxygen reaching the rust = no rust growth or spread. -
Titanium dioxide formula.
Gives it the grey colour and reflects heat away from the surface. -
Cooler surface temperature.
Reduces thermal fatigue on the metal beneath over time. -
Non-sticky when cured.
Walk on it, paint over it — without it grabbing at your feet or tools.

What Aussie DIYers Say About Rust Fix
Rust Fix vs. Regular Roof Paint
Why a rubberised membrane outperforms standard roof paint for rust.
| Feature | Regular Roof Paint | Liquid Rubber Rust Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Rust Barrier | Allows oxygen through — rust keeps breathing and growing underneath | Seals off oxygen completely — rust can't grow without it |
| Flexibility | Cracks as metal expands and contracts in heat | Flexible rubberised membrane — moves with the metal |
| Drying Colour | Dark colours absorb heat, increasing surface temperature | Battleship grey — heat reflective, runs cooler |
| DIY Application | Can be tricky to get full coverage | Grey colour shows you exactly where you've covered |
| Hole Repair | Requires separate patching compound and primer | Embed geo-textile in Rust Fix — one product, one system |

Questions About Rust Fix
Does Rust Fix remove the rust?
No — and it doesn't need to. Rust Fix works by burying the rust and sealing off the oxygen supply. Without oxygen, the rust can't grow or spread. The rust stays in place, permanently sealed under the membrane.
Do I need to use a rust converter before applying?
It's not mandatory, but we recommend it for best results. Phosphoric acid rust converter (available at Bunnings) converts active rust into a stable ferric phosphate layer that bonds better with the membrane. Always rinse thoroughly after the rust converter before applying Rust Fix.
Can I paint over Rust Fix?
Yes. Rust Fix cures to a clean battleship grey that you can paint over once fully dry. The non-sticky finish means paint adhesion is straightforward.
Can I walk on it once cured?
Yes — once fully cured. The non-sticky, hard-set finish means it's walkable. This makes re-applying additional coats and inspection much easier compared to standard liquid rubber.
What about holes in the roof?
Use geo-textile. Lay a strip of geo-textile over the hole into a wet coat of Rust Fix, then apply another coat over the top to fully encapsulate it. This reinforces the membrane structurally over the gap.
Is it the same as your regular Liquid Rubber Sealant?
It's made from the same liquid rubber base, but Rust Fix has titanium dioxide added. This changes the cure colour from black to battleship grey, makes it heat reflective, allows it to dry faster, and means the membrane runs at a cooler temperature — all important for metal roof applications.
How is this different from regular roof paint?
Standard roof paint is a film coating — it doesn't form a continuous sealed membrane and won't block oxygen reliably enough to stop rust growth underneath. Rust Fix is a rubberised membrane system. It bonds, stretches, and seals as a continuous film — a fundamentally different product category.
